1. Dio castiga, eccome se castiga!

[...] Fratelli nel Signore, voglio che sappiate che l'Iddio che adoriamo e serviamo è un Dio che castiga, flagella, giudica, punisce - ora, qui sulla terra - in quanto è giusto. Egli è un giusto giudice (Salmo 7:11) e in quanto tale "non tiene il colpevole per innocente" (Nahum 1:3) ma lo giudica con giustizia, e si badi che il giudicio ha da cominciare dalla casa di Dio, cioè da noi (1 Pietro 4:17). E con questo mio scritto voglio ricordarvi proprio questo aspetto del carattere di Dio - ignorato o rigettato dalla stragrande maggioranza delle Chiese anche qui in Italia - trascrivendo gran parte dei castighi di Dio presenti nella Bibbia, escludendo però da essi quelli che Dio deve ancora infliggere (tra i quali ci sono quelli che infliggerà al mondo degli empi, e che sono trascritti nell'Apocalisse). Ecco contro chi, come e per quale ragione Dio ha esercitato i suoi giudizi. [...]

2. La santificazione

[...] Cari fratelli nel Signore, in questo mio scritto tratterò la santificazione, un tema che ritengo molto importante per noi figliuoli di Dio. Innanzi tutto, tenete bene a mente che voi quando siete nati di nuovo (cioè quando siete stati rigenerati da Dio) siete anche stati santificati, cioè siete stati resi santi. Le seguenti Scritture lo attestano: "Non v'illudete; né i fornicatori, né gl'idolatri, né gli adulteri, né gli effeminati, né i sodomiti, né i ladri, né gli avari, né gli ubriachi, né gli oltraggiatori, né i rapaci erederanno il regno di Dio. E tali eravate alcuni; ma siete stati lavati, ma siete stati santificati, ma siete stati giustificati nel nome del Signor Gesù Cristo, e mediante lo Spirito dell'Iddio nostro" (1 Cor. 6:9-11); "Ma noi siamo in obbligo di render del continuo grazie di voi a Dio, fratelli amati dal Signore, perché Iddio fin dal principio vi ha eletti a salvezza mediante la santificazione nello Spirito e la fede nella verità" (2 Tess. 2:13); "Pietro, apostolo di Gesù Cristo, agli eletti che vivono come forestieri nella dispersione del Ponto, della Galazia, della Cappadocia, dell'Asia e della Bitinia, eletti secondo la prescienza di Dio Padre, mediante la santificazione dello Spirito, ad ubbidire e ad esser cosparsi del sangue di Gesù Cristo..." [...] Cari fratelli nel Signore, pace a voi da Dio nostro Padre. Con questo libro ha inizio una serie di scritti che Dio mi ha dato la grazia di scrivere per l'edificazione della sua Chiesa. Esso contiene degli insegnamenti e delle esortazioni che si propongono di farvi crescere nella conoscenza della Parola di Dio, di indurvi a farvi santificare nel timore di Dio, e di incoraggiarvi a ritenere ferma sino alla fine la fede preziosa che avete ottenuto. Che Dio continui a operare in voi quello che è gradito nel suo cospetto affinché possiate anche voi in quel glorioso giorno comparire davanti a Lui santi e irreprensibili. [...]

4. Teachings and exhortations

[...] In this book there are several teachings and exhortations God has enabled me to write by His grace for the edification of His Church; therefore their aim is to edify the brotherhood. I know that many will say that some of the exhortations (as well as some of the teachings) I wrote are not for their edification. There is nothing to be surprised at, because among the Church of God many don’t endure sound doctrine, but according to their own lusts, because they have itching ears, they have heaped up for themselves teachers who say what their itching ears want to hear and who understand neither what they say nor what they affirm (1 Timothy 1:7), and they have turned their ears away from the truth and have been turned aside to fables. These so called teachers and their followers say: “This man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt”, the same words the rebels spoke against the prophet Jeremiah, who was a holy man of God who spoke from God (Jeremiah 38:4). However, as far as I am concerned, I will continue to say that I speak for the profit of the saints (1 Corinthians 7:35), because the authority the Lord gave me is for their edification, and not for their destruction (2 Corinthians 10:8). Let the rebels continue to slander, let these arrogant people resist the truth; but let them know that the day is coming when their folly will be manifest to all men, as the folly of Jannes and Jambres, who resisted Moses, was manifest to all men. I would like the rebels, who harden their hearts, to come to their senses and recognize the truth and do works worthy of repentance! I would like all those who are my enemies (because of the truth I speak to them) to become my friends! But their conversion depends on the will of God and not on my will. For I know it is God who grants repentance that leads to the knowledge of the truth. Therefore I pray God that He may grant them repentance. I know also that many will be spiritually edified and they will rejoice in the Lord at all the things they will read (so they will rejoice even at those exhortations which make the rebels gnash at me with their teeth), for they love the truth which has set them free from sin and from this evil world. These people are the humble in heart, as it is written: “The humble shall hear thereof, and be glad” (Psalm 34:2); they have found wisdom and they strive always to live honestly before God and before men, so that they may keep their conscience clear toward God and men. May God guard them from the evil one and confirm them to the end, that they may obtain the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. [...]
